How can I tell if my pet has worms?

Worms are difficult to detect at an early stage and in most cases you won’t even know your pet has them as the worms stay hidden inside the gut. Mature tapeworms start shedding egg-filled segments, which irritate the anus as they wriggle out. These often resemble small grains of rice and in dogs often cause them to drag their bottom along the ground. Symptoms may include stomach problems, loss of appetite and in puppies and kittens a pot belly.

Why is it necessary to treat my pet for worms?

Not only does treating your pet help promote good health and reduce environmental contamination, it also helps combat worm-related diseases. Worms can also be passed on to humans, especially younger children. Bayer has a wide range of products that treat pets to help them stay worm-free.

At what age should I start worming my pet?

It’s quite common for puppies to be born with worm larvae present in their gut as often they are exposed to them while still in their mother’s womb. It’s therefore recommending that worming starts when they’re two weeks old, and to continue worming once a fortnight until they are 12 weeks old. From 12 weeks onward, they should be wormed at least once every three months.

Kittens meanwhile aren’t born with worm larvae in the gut, but they often become infected when they suckle their mother’s milk. Because of this it’s usually best to start treating them for roundworms when they’re six weeks old. Continue treating every three weeks until they are 4 months old. After this, they should be treated at least every 3 months or monthly if they are frequent hunters.

How often should I worm my pet?

Adult dogs and cats should be treated for worms at least once every 3 months. Puppies and kittens, cats that hunt, pets that have access to uncooked meat and pets experiencing repeated flea infestations may need treating monthly.

What types of worm does Drontal kill?

Drontal is clinically proven to kill roundworm, hookworm, whipworm and tapeworm in cats and dogs

Are there any side effects to using Drontal?

In general Drontal is very well tolerated in cats and dogs. There is a small chance they may cause vomiting or diarrhoea but this is unusual. Always speak to your vet immediately if you notice any side effects.

Do I give Drontal with or without food?

Drontal can be administered with or without food and you should always read the instructions provided.

Can humans catch worms from pets?

Yes, worms transferred from pets to humans are said to have ‘zoonotic potential’. Dog and cat roundworms can both infect humans. Human infection occurs when a person swallows eggs picked up from contaminated pets or soil and children are at the greatest risk.

How do I administer Drontal?

Drontal tablets can be given whole or hidden in food and Drontal oral suspension is available for puppies.

How do I prevent worm infection?

The only way to effectively control worm infections is by routine treatment.

My cat often catches mice. Does this make worm infection more likely?

Yes. We recommend that adult cats and dogs are treated at least every 3 months, but if your cat is a regular hunter, they may need treating monthly.

Further information
An anthelmintic active against gastrointestinal roundworms and tapeworms. ATC VetCode: QP52 AA51. Pharmacotherapeutic Group: Anthelmintics, Praziquantel combinations. The product contains two active ingredients, pyrantel embonate (pamoate) a tetrahydropyrimidine derivative and praziquantel a partially hydrogenated pyrazino-isoquinoline derivative, used widely as an anthelmintic for both human and veterinary use.
Pyrantel acts as a cholinergic agonist. Its mode of action is to stimulate nicotinic cholinergic receptors of the parasite, induce spastic paralysis and thereby allow expulsion from the gastrointestinal (GI) system by peristalsis.
Praziquantel is very rapidly absorbed and distributed throughout the parasite. Both in vivo and in vitro studies have shown that praziquantel causes severe damage to the parasite integument, resulting in contraction and paralysis. There is an almost instantaneous tetanic contraction of the parasite musculature and a rapid vacuolisation of the syncytial tegument. This rapid contraction has been explained by changes in divalent cation fluxes, especially calcium.
In this fixed combination product, the pyrantel is active against the following ascarids: Toxocara cati, and Toxascaris leonina; the praziquantel is effective against tapeworms, in particular Dipylidium caninum and Taenia taeniaeformis.
The product has been shown to be efficacious in the control of hookworms Ancylostoma tubaeforme and A. braziliense and the tapeworm Joyeuxiella pasqualei, none of which occur naturally in cats in the UK but may occasionally be found in imported animals. Praziquantel is effective against Echinococcus multilocularisE. multilocularis does not occur in the UK but is becoming more common in some European countries. As a precautionary measure to prevent establishment of E. multilocularis in the UK, it is recommended that all dogs and cats entering the country be treated with praziquantel.
Fleas serve as intermediate hosts for one common type of tapeworm - Dipylidium caninum. Tapeworm infection is certain to re-occur unless control of intermediate hosts such as fleas, mice etc. is undertaken.
